Mountain Biking in the North Island Central Plateau of New Zealand
The Central North Island is a wonderful place to mountain bike and explore. If you are a hardened adventurer, or just new to the sport, there is something for all riding abilities, all within a short drive or riding distance. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit when you come, as you'll appreciate a soak in the Tokaanu hot pools after a day out riding your bike.
Below are a few of our best and closest local mountain bike rides. If you plan on getting adventurous, we recommend you track down a copy of the "Kennett Brother's Classic New Zealand Mountain Bike Rides" book and the appropriate topo map for the area you intend to ride. Please remember this is a high altitude area, check the weather forecast before you leave and always pack warm clothes, rainwear and food to take with you.
Turangi River Track Location: Turangi River. Just outside the back gate from Creel Lodge. Map: Topo Map 260 - T19 Tongariro. 1:50,000 Rideability: Easy, great for family rides. You can even bring the dog along for a stroll. Do watch out for walkers and anglers, as this is a shared use track. Time: For the full loop 40 minutes to 1 hour
Tree Trunk Gorge Location: Kaimanawa Forest Park. 15-20 minutes drive from the Turangi Village. Map: Topo Map 260 - T19 Tongariro. 1:50,000 Rideability: Average to Experienced Time: 1 hour, one way to carpark, or do the 2-4 hour loop, which takes in the Pillars of Hercules.
Pillars of Hercules Location: Kaimanawa Forest Park. 15-20 minutes drive from the Turangi Village. Map: Topo Map 260 - T19 Tongariro. 1:50,000 Rideability: Easy, great for family rides. Time: Allow for an hour there and back with family, or 30 minutes for adult riders
