"The landscape surrounding the Tongariro crossing is magical”

Rachel McDonald – UK

Never the same, even 24 hours apart, the constantly changing weather patterns provide you with fantastic views and challenging terrains.

In September 2007 The Department of Consrevation officially renamed New Zealand most popular one day walk The Tongriro Alpine Crossing, to better reflect the nature and terrain of the track.

THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

Hiking as you will only experience in New Zealand.

The Tongariro Crossing climbs 17km/10 miles through spectacular volcanic terrain leading through open plains up into wide plateues, flanked by mountains and stunning volcanic lakes.

Your hike will lead you to the Red Crater (1886m / 6184ft) passing between the two active volcanoes - Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, before descending via the Emerald and Blue Lakes to Ketetahi Hot Springs and back to the car park.
